INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a serious disease that requires early diagnosis to achieve a better patient prognosis. Right heart catheterization (RHC) has become the main diagnostic test for this disease, measuring the pressures from the right heart chambers invasively, using a catheter placed through venous access. Nursing performance has an important role in RHC through peripheral venous access due to its well-done skills for canalization and knowledge about the management and care of these accesses. RHC performed through peripheral venous access provide advantages over those performed through central venous access. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the benefits from RHC through peripheral venous access compared to those performed through central venous access, as well as highlighting the role of nursing during this type of procedures. METHOD: A retrospective, descriptive, and observational study was performed for patients who underwent RHC in our center between January 2019 to January 2023. We analyzed clinical characteristics, access, fluoroscopy parameters, periprocedural complications, and hospital admissions. RESULT: A total of 115 patients were included. The average age was 65±12 years, with 58.1% of females. Risk stratification of PH was the reason for conducting RHC in 82.9%. The anterocubital veins became the main approach (72.2%), performed by hemodynamics nurses, while the central venous ones composed the rest (27.8%), which were done by cardiology specialized doctors. We observed a significant reduction in radiation dose in RHC via anterocubital route compared to central venous access (4.4Gycm2 vs 12.5Gycm2 [IQR: 4.5]; P<.001), and it does also in fluoroscopy times (2.3minutes vs 4.6minutes [IQR: 2.6]; P<.001). No complications were recorded, independently of the approach. Patients who underwent a scheduled catheterization were discharged more frequently on the same day of the procedure whether a peripheral approach was performed (77.2%, 44 of 57 patients), in comparison with the central one (28.6%) (P=.001). CONCLUSIONS: The RHC is an essential tool for the diagnosis of PH, achieving nursing such an important role for those performed by peripheral venous access. Peripheral venous access provides benefits and advantages like the reduction of radiation exposure and scan times, reduced hospital stay. All this could bring greater comfort, safety and better quality of care to the patient.

The brown meagre (Sciaena umbra) is an endangered species, which requires specific protection measures to ensure its conservation. These measures need to be informed by high-quality scientific knowledge on their space use patterns. Here, we used acoustic telemetry to assess its seasonal movement patterns and habitat use within a marine protected area (MPA). Our results suggested that S. umbra is a highly sedentary species (home range < 1.0 km2) and, therefore, the MPA is extensive enough to protect the local population. Their population was discretely distributed in two main areas within the MPA, which was likely a result of habitat segregation and density-dependent movements. The temporal variability of their movements further uncovered when and where spawning occurs (mainly, but probably not only, in the fully protected area in June) and indicated that spillover of this species is limited but still possible. Overall, we highlight the importance of MPAs in the recovery of S. umbra, we advocate the need to perpetuate the current national fishing bans and extend it to other countries in the Mediterranean region, and we emphasize that considering the fine-scale movements of S. umbra in future management actions is key to achieving a successful recovery of their populations.

The composition of the protein corona varies depending on several parameters and influences the cellular fate of the nanocarriers. Here, we investigated the influence of three key parameters (surface charge, temperature, and plasma concentration) on the formation and composition of the protein corona of polystyrene nanoparticles and ultimately on the cellular uptake of pre-coated nanoparticles. At a fixed temperature and concentration, the surface charge, and surfactant influence its composition. We observed that the composition of the corona formed at low temperatures (4°C) is different from that formed at physiological temperatures (37°C). At low plasma concentrations (up to 25%), the corona consists of more diverse proteins than at higher concentrations. Finally, we concluded that regardless of the nanoparticle formulation, the degree of uptake by model cancer and endothelial cells of the nanoparticles decreased when pre-coated at increasing temperature or plasma concentration. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Drug delivery through nanocarriers is an increasingly important concept in research and medicine. One problem in the application of nanocarriers in medicine is the protein corona that forms around the nanocarriers when they get in contact with protein-containing fluids. So far, several factors have been identified that influence the composition of the protein corona and thus the biological identity of the particles. However, lacking comparability remains between the studies because different concentrations or temperatures of the protein solutions are used. In this study we demonstrate how the incubation temperature or the concentration of plasma influences the protein corona and thus the cellular uptake of polystyrene nanoparticles.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy of intra-alveolar administration of dexamethasone 4 mg in the control of edema, trismus, and pain resulting from the extraction of impacted lower third molars and the drug permeability through the oral mucosa by in silico prediction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The randomized, double-blind, split-mouth clinical trial included patients who had both impacted lower third molars in equivalent positions. Hemiarches were divided into control side when dexamethasone was administered orally and experimental side when dexamethasone was administered using the intra-alveolar route. Patients were evaluated considering edema, trismus, and pain. The permeability of dexamethasone through the oral mucosa was assessed by in silico prediction. Student's t-test was selected for comparative analysis of edema and trismus, and the chi-square test analyzed the distribution of postoperative pain between the sides. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the routes of administration in measuring symptoms between the pre and postoperative times (p>0.05). In silico prediction suggested that dexamethasone molecular characteristics facilitate intra-alveolar administration. CONCLUSIONS: Intra-alveolar administration had similar efficacy to oral administration in controlling symptoms of post-surgical inflammation of impacted lower third molars.

Abstract Aim: Prejudice against women's futsal players is reported in the literature. The perception of prejudice in university futsal may be lower due to the higher educational level of the players and a more open-minded context. This study aimed to describe the experience of young women university futsal players and to explore their perspective on gender prejudice in that sports practice. Methods: Ten women university futsal players (aged 18 to 30 years old) were interviewed. Data were produced and analyzed following a grounded theory approach. Results: The results showed that the athletes perceived they suffered gender prejudice for playing futsal, however, in the university context this was attenuated. The participants experienced diversified practice before specializing in futsal and felt that the support of male family members and friends was important to their engagement in futsal and soccer in childhood and adolescence. However, they also suffered from prejudice against their futsal practice coming from family and friends, struggling with the constant association between futsal practice and hegemonic masculinity. Conclusion: The participants of this study perceived less prejudice in university women's futsal in comparison to other sports contexts. Thus, the university context may have the potential to boost the practice of futsal among women.

The spatio-temporal variability of fish distribution is important to better manage and protect the populations of endangered species. In this sense, the vertical movements of a vulnerable and protected species, Sciaena umbra, were assessed in a marine protected area (the Réserve Naturelle Marine de Cerbère-Banyuls, south of France) to study the variability of their bathymetric distribution at different time scales. Twenty adults were marked with acoustic transmitters and acoustically monitored over 2.5 years. This revealed that some individuals remained at shallow waters (< 8 m) all year round, while others presented vertical segregation at deeper waters during the cold months (mean depth of 22.5 ± 0.04 m) and all aggregated in shallow waters during the warm months. The brown meagre was more active during the night, except in June and July when peaks of activity were observed at dusk. These patterns are likely associated with foraging and reproductive behavior during the cold and warm periods, respectively, and likely regulated by water temperature and the depth of the thermocline. Here, we provide valuable information on when and where in the water column critical periods of S. umbra life cycle are expected to occur, which should be considered in management and protection plans.

COVID-19, although a respiratory illness, has been clinically associated with non-respiratory symptoms. We conducted a negative case-control study to identify the symptoms associated with SARS-CoV-2-positive results in Portugal. Twelve symptoms and signs included in the clinical notification of COVID-19 were selected as predictors, and the dependent variable was the RT-PCR test result. The χ2 tests were used to compare notified cases on sex, age group, health region and presence of comorbidities. The best-fit prediction model was selected using a backward stepwise method with an unconditional logistic regression. General and gastrointestinal symptoms were strongly associated with a positive test (P < 0.001). In this sense, the inclusion of general symptoms such as myalgia, headache and fatigue, as well as diarrhoea, together with actual clinical criteria for suspected cases, already updated and included in COVID-19 case definition, can lead to increased identification of cases and represent an effective strength for transmission control.

New ceramic formulations based on scheelite tailing were developed, and their potential in the ceramic industry was evaluated. Green bodies with different contents of scheelite tailing (0-8 wt%) were sintered (1150 °C, 1200 °C, and 1250 °C) and characterized in terms of the main mineralogical phases, microstructure, and physico-mechanical properties. The mullite was the main phase identified in all sintered temperatures. This result was also ratified with the aid of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, in which small needles of the mullite were detected. The presence of mullite is required because it contributes to increasing the mechanical resistance of the material. The physico-mechanical properties measured (water absorption, linear shrinkage, apparent porosity, and flexural strength) were compared to the ISO 13006, and the samples sintered at 1150 °C presented potential to be used as semi-stoneware, while those sintered at 1200 °C and 1250 °C can be employed stoneware and porcelain tiles, respectively.

The Aminophospholipid ATPase (ALA) family of plant lipid flippases is involved in the selective transport of lipids across membrane bilayers. Recently, we demonstrated that double mutants lacking both ALA4 and -5 are severely dwarfed. Dwarfism in ala4/5 mutants was accompanied by cellular elongation defects and various lipidomic perturbations, including a 1.4-fold increase in the accumulation of glucosylceramides (GlcCers) relative to total sphingolipid content. Here, we present a potential model for flippase-facilitated GlcCer catabolism in plants, where a combination of ALA flippases transport GlcCers to cytosolic membrane surfaces where they are degraded by Glucosylceramidases (GCDs). GCDs remove the glucose headgroup from GlcCers to produce a ceramide (Cer) backbone, which can be further degraded to sphingoid bases (Sphs, e.g, phytosphingosine) and fatty acids (FAs). In the absence of GlcCer-transporting flippases, GlcCers are proposed to accumulate on extracytoplasmic (i.e., apoplastic) or lumenal membrane surfaces. As GlcCers are potential precursors for Sph production, impaired GlcCer catabolism might also result in the decreased production of the secondary messenger Sph-1-phosphate (Sph-1-P, e.g., phytosphingosine-1-P), a regulator of cell turgor. Importantly, we postulate that either GlcCer accumulation or reduced Sph-1-P signaling might contribute to the growth reductions observed in ala4/5 mutants. Similar catabolic pathways have been proposed for humans and yeast, suggesting flippase-facilitated GlcCer catabolism is conserved across eukaryotes.

The decline in bee populations worldwide has been associated with the use of pesticides in crop systems where these insects forage. The use of biopesticides, like spinosad, is preferred as an alternative method to control pests, because it is considered safer to non-target insects. In this study, we evaluated the lethal and sublethal effects of the spinosad-based formulation Tracer® on foragers of the stingless bee Plebeia lucii Moure (Apidae: Meliponini). Groups of bees were fed a pure diet (negative control) or a diet at different concentrations of spinosad. Positive control groups consisted of bees orally exposed to a diet with the neonicotinoid imidacloprid. Next, flight behavior, body mass, and respiration rate were evaluated in surviving bees. The results showed that bees´ survival was reduced by all concentrations of spinosad, when compared with the negative control. Bee locomotion-walking and flight-was reduced in accordance with the increase in spinosad concentrations; however, body mass and respiration rate were not altered. Our results show that the use of Tracer® in ecosystems visited by P. lucii can reduce forager bee survival and reduce their locomotion, generating a negative impact on pollination services provided by these bees.

Wild almond species accumulate the bitter and toxic cyanogenic diglucoside amygdalin. Almond domestication was enabled by the selection of genotypes harboring sweet kernels. We report the completion of the almond reference genome. Map-based cloning using an F1 population segregating for kernel taste led to the identification of a 46-kilobase gene cluster encoding five basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors, bHLH1 to bHLH5. Functional characterization demonstrated that bHLH2 controls transcription of the P450 monooxygenase-encoding genes PdCYP79D16 and PdCYP71AN24, which are involved in the amygdalin biosynthetic pathway. A nonsynonymous point mutation (Leu to Phe) in the dimerization domain of bHLH2 prevents transcription of the two cytochrome P450 genes, resulting in the sweet kernel trait.

PURPOSE: Internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling is important for macular hole (MH) surgery but may have secondary effects visible on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG). We relate integrity of inner and outer macular layers with functional results with mfERG. METHODS: Nonrandomized prospective study of 33 consecutive eyes of 33 patients with macular hole who underwent vitrectomy with ILM peeling. Best-corrected visual acuity was assessed, and integrity of external layers was measured using OCT. Each component of mfERG, N1 and P1 amplitude and latency, was also measured. RESULTS: All eyes showed macular hole closure. Visual acuity improved from 20/400 to 20/40 in the Snellen visual acuity chart (P < 0.001), and OCT external lines were intact in 19 eyes and disrupted in 14 eyes. Postoperatively, N1 and P1 amplitudes in ring 1 increased compared to preoperative values (P < 0.001 for both). Latency remained delayed for both N1 and P1 wave. In the group of 19 eyes with integrity of outer retinal layers, N1 amplitude in ring 1 was superior to the group of 14 patients with disrupted outer retinal layers (P=0.042). CONCLUSIONS: In macular hole surgery, structure analysis in OCT is one of the important outcomes for the retinal surgeon. Functional results are parallel with anatomic results, but visual gain is limited. The limited recovery in mfERG suggests an alteration of retinal physiology that could explain limited vision recover.

Excitable temperament disrupts physiological events required for reproductive development in cattle, but no research has investigated the impacts of temperament on growth and puberty attainment in Bos indicus females. Hence, this experiment evaluated the effects of temperament on growth, plasma cortisol concentrations and puberty attainment in B. indicus heifers. A total of 170 Nelore heifers, weaned 4 months before the beginning of this experiment (days 0 to 91), were managed in two groups of 82 and 88 heifers each (mean ± SE; initial BW=238±2 kg, initial age=369±1 days across groups). Heifer temperament was evaluated via exit velocity on day 0. Individual exit score was calculated within each group by dividing exit velocity into quintiles and assigning heifers with a score from 1 to 5 (1=slowest; 5=fastest heifer). Heifers were classified according to exit score as adequate (ADQ, n=96; exit score⩽3) or excitable temperament (EXC, n=74; exit score>3). Heifer BW, body condition score (BCS) and blood samples were obtained on days 0, 31, 60 and 91. Heifer exit velocity and score were recorded again on days 31, 60 and 91. Ovarian transrectal ultrasonography was performed on days 0 and 10, 31 and 41, 60 and 70, 81 and 91 for puberty evaluation. Heifer was declared pubertal at the first 10-day interval in which a corpus luteum was detected. Exit velocity and exit score obtained on day 0 were correlated (r⩾0.64, P<0.01) with evaluations on days 31, 60 and 91. During the experiment, ADQ had greater (P<0.01) mean BCS and BW gain, and less (P<0.01) mean plasma cortisol concentration compared with EXC heifers. Temperament × time interactions were detected (P<0.01) for exit velocity and exit score, which were always greater (P<0.01) in EXC v. ADQ heifers. A temperament × time interaction was also detected (P=0.03) for puberty attainment, which was delayed in EXC v. ADQ heifers. At the end of the experiment, a greater (P<0.01) proportion of ADQ were pubertal compared with EXC heifers. In summary, B. indicus heifers classified as EXC had reduced growth, increased plasma cortisol concentrations and hindered puberty attainment compared to ADQ heifers. Moreover, exit velocity may serve as temperament selection criteria to optimize development of B. indicus replacement heifers.

Nutritional alternatives to strengthen animal immunocompetence are critical for welfare and productivity in livestock systems, such as beef cattle operations. This experiment evaluated physiological and innate immunity effects of supplementing an immunomodulatory feed ingredient (Omnigen-AF; Phibro Animal Health, Teaneck, NJ, USA) to beef heifers administered bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In total, 8 non-pregnant, non-lactating nulliparous Angus×Hereford heifers (676±4 days of age) were ranked by BW (473±8 kg), and assigned to crossover design containing two periods of 34 days each. Heifers were housed in individual pens and had ad libitum access to meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis L.) hay, water and a granulated commercial vitamin+mineral mix. Within each period, heifers received (as-fed basis) 227 g/day of dried distillers grains including (OMN) or not (CON) 56 g of Omnigen-AF for 34 days. On day 28 of each period (0800 h), heifers received an intravenous bolus dose (0.5 µg/kg of BW, diluted in 5 ml of 0.9% sterile saline) of bacterial LPS (Escherichia coli 0111:B4). Hay DM intake was recorded daily from day 0 to 34. Blood was collected at -1, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 h relative to LPS administration. Heifer intravaginal temperature was recorded every 10 min from -0.5 to 10 h relative to LPS administration. No treatment effect was detected (P=0.35) for hay DM intake during the experiment. No treatment effects were detected (P⩾0.64) for intravaginal temperature and plasma concentrations of tumor necrosis-α, cortisol and haptoglobin, which increased (time effect, P<0.01) for OMN and CON heifers and peaked at 4.5, 2, 4 and 48 h, respectively, after LPS administration. No treatment effects were detected (P⩾0.35) for whole blood mRNA expression of chemokine ligand 5, tumor necrosis-α, cyclooxygenase 2 and interleukin 8, which also increased (time effect, P<0.01) for OMN and CON heifers and peaked at 0.5, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 h, respectively, after LPS administration. Whole blood mRNA expression of interleukin 8 receptor and L-selectin were also similar (P⩾0.61) between OMN and CON heifers, and decreased (time effect, P<0.01) for both treatments reaching nadir levels at 1 and 2.5 h, respectively, after LPS administration. Collectively, OMN supplementation did not modulate the physiological and innate immunity responses of beef heifers to bacterial LPS administration.

Surgical management in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) has a significant impact in overall survival and progression-free survival. The Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology (BSSO) supported a taskforce of experts to reach a consensus: experienced and specialised trained surgeons, in cancer centres, provide the best EOC surgery. Laparoscopic and/or radiological staging prognosticates the possibility of complete cytoreduction (CC0) and helps to reduce unnecessary laparotomies. Surgical techniques were reviewed. Multidisciplinary input is essential for treatment planning. Quality assurance criteria are proposed and require national consensus. Genetic testing is mandatory. This consensus states the final recommendations from BSSO for management of EOC. Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted great attention owing to their applications in the biomedical field. In the present work, maghemite (γFe2O3) NPs of 6.5 nm were prepared using a sonochemical method and used to prepare magnetic beads through silanization with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTS). Subsequently, amino groups in the resulting APTS-γFe2O3 beads were converted to carboxylic acid (CARB-γFe2O3) through the succinic anhydride reaction, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The size of these beads was measured as 12 nm and their hydrodynamic diameter as 490 nm, using TEM analysis and DLS, respectively. The CARB-γFe2O3 beads were further functionalized by immobilizing rabbit antibodies on their surfaces; the immobilization was confirmed by flow cytometry and ionic strength. The samples were further characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy and DC magnetization measurements. Studies on magnetic relaxivities showed that magnetic beads present great potential for application in MR imaging.
